How artificial intelligence is changing dentistry

technology in dentistry

Artificial intelligence is transforming the field of dentistry by providing dentists with tools to enhance patient care. For example, AI-powered software can analyze dental images to accurately diagnose oral diseases and detect early signs of serious conditions like oral cancer. In addition, AI can develop personalized treatment plans tailored to patients' unique needs, leading to more effective outcomes.

While AI offers significant benefits, it also presents challenges. Computers cannot provide the same interpretive insights as humans. Dentists are still needed to apply recommendations based on patient preferences. Appropriate safeguards and training are necessary to ensure dentists use AI tools effectively. With prudent implementation, AI can enhance the patient experience and outcomes.

We are committed to staying on the forefront as dentistry changes and evolves because it helps us to continue to provide the best patient care possible.

Here is some technology we are either implementing or looking into implementing into our practice.

Computer-aided CEREC Crown Milling

One of the main benefits of CEREC crowns is the ability to produce them on-site, eliminating the need for multiple appointments and temporary crowns. Traditional dental crown procedures require at least two appointments, with the patient needing to wait several weeks for their permanent crown to be fabricated in a dental lab off-site. CEREC crowns, which we currently provide, can be designed, milled and placed during a single appointment, saving patients valuable time and reducing the risk of complications.

Another benefit of CEREC crowns is their precise fit, which minimizes the risk of decay and other dental problems. The CAD/CAM system used by CEREC is extremely accurate, allowing for crowns that fit snugly over the patient's tooth. This precision also leads to a more natural-looking crown, as the ceramic material used closely mimics the tooth's color and translucency.

In our practice, we use computers to design and create new tooth materials and that AI is making the designs better/faster than ever.

Machine Learning

At the forefront of every dental solution the industry offers is the foundation of machine learning and computer vision. These technologies are changing the way dental practitioners conduct radiologic analysis, enhancing image quality and precision to ensure accurate diagnoses and treatments.

Pearl is a good example of one program that is beginning to make its way into the industry that we are watching. Pearl is an AI tool that helps dentists diagnose by providing a second set of eyes, objectively measuring cavity size and analyzing X-rays to make sure no disease gets overlooked.

AI's Impact on Diagnosis and Treatment Planning in Dentistry

AI technology is still new to dentistry, but it could change the way dentists work. AI may help spot small details in teeth that are hard to see. It can also reduce mistakes when diagnosing problems or planning treatment. This is important for checking new patients or looking at old cases again.

AI can analyze X-rays, scans and software used by dentists and labs. It may help create treatment plans and list steps in the right order. The AI could be for patients or dentists, depending on the software. Different groups may make AI for different goals. The AI can be tailored to suggest specific outcomes based on how it's designed.

It is an exciting time for dentistry, and we are honored to continue to provide you with quality and innovative care. If you’re looking for a new dental home, you have come to the right place. Schedule a visit today.

As we make way for May, a month of bright blossoms and the start of warmer weather, we also celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month . During this time, we focus our attention on highlighting the fundamental significance of mental wellness. During discussions surrounding anxiety and depression, one topic often overlooked is dental anxiety - an issue that affects millions around the world. Dental anxiety extends beyond mere dislike about going to the dentist. Rather, it is a complex emotional response that can stem from previous experiences, anticipated pain or discomfort or generalized anxiety disorders. For many people, even thinking about dental procedures can trigger intense fear reactions, panic attacks or behaviors aimed at avoiding dental care altogether. Understanding that dental anxiety isn't just about oral health but is often intertwined with broader mental health issues is vital. If you suffer from anxiety disorders or have had traumatic histories, you may be particularly susceptible to dental anxiety. Here are some tips that you can take to help break the cycle of fear and promote overall wellness. Open Communication: Don't hesitate to discuss your trepidation and fears with your dentist. Our team can tailor our approach based on your or your child’s individual needs and offer comforting reassurances throughout your appointment. Relaxation Techniques: Utilize relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation or progressive muscle relaxation before and during your dental appointment. These methods can reduce anxiety levels and promote a feeling of calmness. Gradual Exposure: If you find yourself overwhelmed by dread at the thought of visiting the dentist, consider gradually exposing yourself to different aspects of it – start with neutral activities like sitting in the waiting room or discussing treatment plans. Sedation Dentistry: If you grapple with intense dental anxiety, sedation dentistry can offer significant relief. This method employs medication to induce relaxation during dental procedures, leading to a more comfortable and stress-free experience. Seeking Professional Assistance: If dental anxiety is significantly disrupting your daily life, it might be helpful to reach out to a mental health professional. Therapy offers valuable coping strategies and tools to effectively help manage your feelings. Dental anxiety doesn't only affect adults - children can also struggle with it, often due to fear of the unknown or past negative experiences. As parents and caregivers, it's essential to establish positive connections with dental care early on. Here are some suggestions: Early Familiarization: Introduce children to the dental environment well before their first appointment. This can help them become used to both their surroundings and the dental team. Role-playing: Encourage pretend play at home that simulates dentist visits. This helps children grow comfortable with the concept of dental procedures in a fun, secure and non-threatening environment. Positive Reinforcement: Praise and reward your child's bravery during dentist appointments. Emphasize the role of oral hygiene in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Plus, many little ones look forward to a visit to the toy chest after a visit! While dental anxiety can present a significant challenge to achieving optimal oral health and overall wellness, by addressing the mental health aspects of dental anxiety and applying practical coping strategies, both adults and children can overcome fears and foster positive experiences with dentistry.
